Tradition matters in Ireland and in many areas the blanket bog has been traditionally cut for turf. Cutting turf, or peat, for family fires is a centuries old tradition in Ireland where turbary ( or the right of private individuals to cut turf for domestic use) has been handed down from generation to generation. That tradition still exists in the Ballycastle area where burning turf is part of the culture and used on open fires and stoves giving a distinctive ‘peat reek’ or smell when burnt.
